#08-22 Day 7

 Day 7 - April 8, 2022

We left our long driving day until Friday when most ALBW events were over.  After seeing a trailer for GJ series 2 and finding out one location was Riveaulx Abbey, it was on the top of our list to visit.

Enroute to Riveaulx, we came upon Monk Pond Farm with the cutest & largest gnome we've ever seen!  As we drew closer to Riveaulx, we drove through a small village called Scawton that was lovely & picturesque.

I was navigating and tried to withhold my screeches of panic as the car scraped way too closely to the bushes alongside the narrow roads! I applaud Julia for her skillful driving that I would NOT have attempted. As I was looking at the directions on my phone, Julia gasped as the Abbey suddenly appeared.

It is absolutely THE MOST STUNNING place I have ever been and I felt extremely emotional being there as we wandered beneath the arches with the blue sky & sun shining. We enjoyed afternoon tea, scones & Devon cream as we gazed at the Abbey through a dew covered window.

After finally tearing ourselves away, we drove through the Yorkshire Moors to Whitby, "Jewel of the Yorkshire Coast". This seaside town is so quaint with narrow cobbled streets, all manner of boats in the harbour and 199 steps up to the Whitby Abbey and graveyard overlooking the sea.  Bram Stoker took inspiration from the Abbey and surrounding area while writing Dracula.

As we continued South we came upon the picturesque fishing village, Robin Hoods Bay which was a lovely surprise. We made our way down the narrow streets to the boat launch and slowly made our way back up the steep roads with tiny shops towering over us.

Our last stop was Yorkshire's original seaside resort, Scarborough which was a significant place to Anne Lister and her long time love, Marianna Belcombe (Lawton).

Walked:  19,973 steps (13.16 kms)
